Lucy plays a key role within our team, making sure that everyone is supported within their role. Her aim is to work with each of our team members to make sure that they are satisfied and have access to the development opportunities they require. Her expertise ensures that the Make Me Local team is set up to thrive and continue delivering the best possible service for our clients.
A bit of an adrenaline junkie, Lucy worked in Greece as a catapult bungee rocket attendant and has completed three bungee jumps herself. The most royal member of Make Me Local, Lucy and her family were once invited to the summer garden party at Buckingham Palace (her overriding memory of the occasion was wondering what the Queen kept in her handbag). When she is not living life on the edge or hobnobbing with royalty, Lucy sings in the local Love2sing choir.
Lucy’s quickfire questions
What’s your job in a nutshell?
It is my responsibility to support and provide guidance of the lifecycles of all our employees. This refers to recruitment, onboarding, training and development, talent management, compensation and benefits, and performance management.
Tell me some of the most important things about your job role. What do you need to be good at?
As an HR professional, it’s really important to have good organisational skills as well as clear communication. Confidentiality when handling sensitive information is also a must. Then, possibly most importantly, you need to have the ability to adapt quickly to manage change.
Give me two or three pieces of wisdom about your role. What is particularly important?
There’s a quote from Sir Richard Branson that I love. I think it says it all….
“Train people well enough so they can leave. Treat them well enough so they don’t want to.”
Which Make Me Local value is most applicable to your role?
They are all definitely applicable, but if I have to choose one I would say “strength through teamwork”.
There can often be a perception that HR is negative. However, it’s really important to understand that HR is about empowering people to create their own pathway. I want to work with people in a supportive and positive way to allow them to do this. That begins with teamwork.
How did you get into your industry? What interests you about it?
I got into HR by chance! I took a temporary job when I returned from travelling in my early 20s and was tasked with doing administration for the Head of HR at a recruitment agency. I soon realised that I enjoyed it and decided to pursue it. HR is a field that always interests me because it covers such a broad range of topics and is a constant learning journey.
